Geothermal
Geothermal in Rochester, NY
Ground-source heat for Rochester winters -- and summers.
Geothermal heat pump systems tap the earth's stable 50F ground temperature to heat and cool your home year-round. With the federal 30% tax credit (IRC 25D) locked in through 2032 and NYS Clean Heat rebates stacking on top, the rebate stack on geothermal is as strong as it has ever been in Monroe County.

Credentials
Certified for this work.
Our process
How it works.
Site Assessment
We evaluate your lot size, soil type, existing heating system, and utility bills to determine the best loop type and system size. Most site visits take 60-90 minutes.
Permit and Design
We handle Monroe County permits, utility interconnection paperwork, and loop field design. Open-loop systems near water require additional DEC permit coordination which we manage.
Installation
Loop field drilling or trenching typically takes 1-3 days. Unit installation and commissioning takes an additional 1-2 days. We restore the landscape after loop field installation.
Rebate Filing
We provide all documentation needed for the federal 25D tax credit and coordinate the NYS Clean Heat rebate application with RG&E or NYSEG on your behalf.

FAQ
Common questions.
- How much does geothermal cost in Rochester, NY?
- Total cost depends heavily on your loop type (horizontal vs vertical), system size, ductwork, and home layout — every quote is custom. The federal 30% tax credit (IRC 25D, locked through 2032) plus NYS Clean Heat rebates substantially reduce the net cost for Monroe County homeowners. We provide a written, itemized estimate with rebate guidance built in — no pressure, no fabricated savings figures.
- Does geothermal work in Rochester winters?
- Yes. Ground temperature in Monroe County stays near 50F year-round regardless of air temperature. Geothermal systems are not air-source -- they don't lose efficiency when it's -10F outside. Most systems operate efficiently without backup heat, though we often recommend a small backup element for extreme cold spells.
- How much land do I need for geothermal?
- Horizontal loop fields require roughly 2x the square footage of the home. Vertical loops (drilled 150-300 ft deep) fit on lots as small as 50x100 ft. We'll assess your property and recommend the most cost-effective option.
- Is the federal geothermal tax credit still available in 2026?
- Yes. The federal 25D Residential Clean Energy Credit covers 30% of geothermal heat pump system costs through 2032. Note: the 25C energy efficiency credit (which covered air-source heat pumps and envelope improvements) expired December 31, 2025. Geothermal-specific 25D credit is separate and remains active.
- How long does a geothermal loop last?
- Properly installed closed-loop fields last 50+ years -- longer than the home itself in most cases. The heat pump unit itself typically lasts 20-25 years, comparable to a high-efficiency furnace. We back our installations with a 5-year labor warranty and pass through manufacturer equipment warranties.
